Don’t Lose Your Teeth to Gum Disease

A gingival gum graft is a procedure that Dr. Qureshi may recommend to patients as a way to control and reverse serious dental diseases. This procedure is particularly useful when you have exposed roots that causes plaque and calculus to accumulate on them. When that happens, your tooth may decay quickly and need to be extracted. A gum graft protects the roots of your teeth in addition to covering them. Some people also choose to undergo this procedure voluntarily for cosmetic purposes.
The Gingival Gum Graft Procedure
Dr. Qureshi begins this procedure by taking a small piece of connective tissue from the roof of your mouth and then immediately closes the wound. Next, he sutures the tissue to your gum line to cover the exposed roots. The transplanted tissue will continue to grow until the roots are completely covered and you can resume your regular oral hygiene routine. Occasionally, a patient will not have adequate connective tissue on their palate and Dr. Qureshi will need to remove it from the surface area. However, he avoids this whenever possible as it tends to cause more bleeding and pain than taking tissue from the roof of the mouth.
Expectations for Recovery
When you cannot brush your teeth properly, a gingival graft corrects that situation. However, you need to allow for recovery time just like any other medical or dental procedure. Within two weeks, the small hole in your palate should heal on its own. A new layer of skin will grow over it until it feels like it did before your oral surgery. You may need to take non-prescription pain killers for the first few days after your gingival gum graft. If you do experience complications or prolonged pain, please don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Qureshi’s office for further instructions.
